nostr isn't an identity backup. nostr *is* the identity. here's how to create a backup of it!

run your own relay. that's it!

you can do this in a multitude of methods. here's just a few simple examples to get you started.

on Android you can run a relay on your phone: https://github.com/greenart7c3/Citrine

on Windows you can run a relay on your computer: https://github.com/CodyTseng/nostr-relay-tray

on Umbrel/Start9/Mynode you can run a relay on your own server: https://apps.umbrel.com/app/nostr-relay

https://github.com/Start9Labs/nostr-rs-relay-startos

if you want a DIY method, you can run a variety of relays too:

https://github.com/cameri/nostream (i use this one.)

https://github.com/hoytech/strfry

good luck!

I don't think Citrine does a rebroadcast restore yet.

Citrine allows you to export and import your database and allows you to restore your contact list, it does not do the broadcasting for you.

Not sure about "nostr is the identity", but one's "nostr identity" is his or her nsec private key. To my thinking, it doesn't matter running your own node or not, it's the protection of the key that matters. Also, not sure how that's backing it up. Writing this, maybe I'm looking at another thing: I was thinking my "nostr identity", my credentials. I think you're talking about creating a backup of my posts and activity and by housing it myself, I'll always have it (unless I wipe it, then it's on me!).

I'm talking specifically about making a backup of your social graph. All of your data that makes your identity, your identity. Nostr allows you to own your data for the very first time. It gives you the power to control and manage your identity. Now, sure, if you don't secure your nsec none of this really matters.

Understood. I went biking after replying and my chipmunk brain 🐿 🧠 figured that's what you were talking about. (Can always think better exercising.) I had nsec backup on my mind due to a chitchat I had on Stacker News a couple of days ago. Supertestnet suggested a technique which was interesting involving a "master nsec" and a "hot nsec" and then a new "hot nsec" if the old one is breached. Still, that's a bit different from what you mean by "identity." Semantics! 😀

Backing up your nsec in a distributed way is where it starts right?

I have an android phone.

How do I run Citrine?

Install th APK and then configure your clients to use the local relay.

I had install the apk on the android i copied the adress ... Provided by the app ...after i got to amethyst - relays - add relay- paste the adress from the apk - save.... How do i know that it's ok sorry for the noob question

Yes, that's how you do it. How do you know it's safe, well we trust nostr:nprofile1qqs827g8dkd07zjvlhh60csytujgd3l9mz7x807xk3fewge7rwlukxgpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhszrnhwden5te0dehhxtnvdakz7qgswaehxw309ahx7um5wghx6mmd9usjfpck 😂 but we can also review the code that he publishes and build it from source.

Nono not if it's safe .... Just if it's working

In Amethyst tap this button here and select only your Citrine relay. Make a new note. See if it shows up in your feed.

Bonus: once you get this figured out, you can use this as a way to post notes when you don't have network connectivity and then later just broadcast them once you're back online.

Working thanks for the help have a great day !

You're welcome! You too!

I have to study more about relays. Because I have a little bit info.

Start9 users waiting for clearnet support be like:

Haha. I ended up dumping StartOS because of this. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic solution and I'd recommend it to everyone, but some people need a tiny bit more customization in their lives.

Ah really? You use Umbrel instead?

I used Umbrel for about 2.5 years. I ended up building a custom node. It works much better for me personally.

Interesting. So many options available

They said 2024…any day now I guess

True how long do they promise it yet ? 🥲

Last time I spoke to them about it in March ‘24:

All of these are just for backup though right?

I'm looking for something that will allow me to set up a personal relay exclusively for events I publish that my friends can connect.

I use Nostream for this. Only my wife and I can write to nostr-relay.derekross.me but the world can read from it.

nostr-relay-tray can manage which events to accept or reject with precision.

the issue is that you need electricity 100% of the time and I'm from Africa we usually have power cuts for days

so we manage power and we are limited to what we can do.

running your own relays isn't for us

I need better protection of my private key... The fact I have to enter it into these sites scares me :(

Don't enter it into websites. Use a NIP-07 web browser extension such as Nostr Connect or Alby

Does the protocol support "signing" with my pvt key? Ideally that is the best option I know of. Or perhaps these browser extensions enable that functionality?
