Recently, LibreOffice is a good competitor to Microsoft's offering but other domains are kinda lacking. You kinda need a people in the domain who are also programmers for a FOSS app to take off.

some people do though, so the tool does need to be versatile, with a wide array of features, and just the right ones to make them highly versatile. people who create visual content know the building blocks for how to do everything. the tool needs to know how they think.
