Daily Roman History:
Fluctuating between ignored but accepted cult, and actively persecuted faction depending on the attitude of the ruler Christianity began its journey to official state religion of the Roman Empire under the Emperor Constantine the Great. After the collapse of the Tetrarchy several claimants began a civil war for sole rule, among which was Constantine. According to legend one night he had a dream which said "In this sign thou shalt conquer", the sign in question was the Chi Rho, an early Christian symbol. Shortly after this vision he had his army mark their shields with the symbol and adopted it as a standard. 'Under this sign' the battle of Milvian Bridge was fought which won Constantine his Imperial title. One interesting note is though Constantine was a practicing Christian he was not baptized until his final days, perhaps a way to absolve himself of all sin before death.
