When I was 17, I read the bible and came across 1 Cor 14 that says to desire the gifts of the spirit, especially the gift of prophecy.

I did desire it and asked God for it, but I didn't know how to implement it.

2 years later, at 19, I was doing a DTS and we were at a conference and they led us in a "Treasure Hunt", that is to ask God for a location, name, description, ailment etc. Write it down and then go out and find the person God has highlighted to let them know how much God loves them.

Well, when they told us how to do this, they also gave me the key I'd been missing for how to hear God's voice.

They said to write down the first thing that came to mind, as that was God.

Why? Because that's how much God wants to partner with us and love on people. We can trust that if we listen to Him, what we get is actually from Him and not just our own thoughts.

I took this to heart, and have blessed many people by simply starting to share what I think God is saying to them, expecting what comes to my mind is from God.

Part of this experience is why I decided to write "The Prophetic Detective".

Yes, the other part was because I wanted someone to partner with the cops to solve crime, actually using God who is all good and all knowing rather than psychics or simply hyper observant people pretending to be psychics.

I wanted something for people to enjoy that brings life, and can be used in real life unlike Harry Potter and such.

Yes, the book is 100% fiction, and follows Faith and her life as a P.I. in a small town, but it also includes real tangible information that can translate to real life.

Being a Prophet and knowing how to prophesy are different. Being able to prophesy is for everyone.

Joel 2:28 - After this I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will have dreams, and your young men will see visions.

that's very cool. i discovered this same thing, the trigger was Phillipians 4:6-7, which explains prayer. the only thing i would add to your insight into this is that it helps to ask the questions out loud, obviously, in privacy (i think those verses mention that?).

the most startling result i got one time, standing in front of this farmhouse on the side of a crazy italian road outside of bologna, the voice told me to wait here just a minute. then a lady shows up and feeds me and sends me off with a bag full of food that kept me fed for the next day.
