Use nostr.band to search for topics you're interested in -- see who's posted about that, check their follow list for more follows

This is great advice! NOSTR.band is a good resource

Read this blog I published yesterday on this exact question:

How to Make the Most of your Nostr Experience? https://medium.com/@SovereignMatt/how-to-make-the-most-of-your-nostr-experience-f7504f44ad39

Hi Matt, Yes, your post yesterday was awesome! If people who are signing up with a client were "forced" to read your post, it would be a great improvement to the current onboarding of new users. I think many people have difficulty when they first join NOSTR because most clients "force" (not really force, but the end result is the same) you to follow from a list of "top people" who happen to be mostly Bitcoin enthusiasts and Programmmers. Then they get confused and ask "is NOSTR only about Bitcoin? I have a concept of having a sign in process where you are prompted to follow "groups" and there are "experts" in each group. Experts currently defined as "people who are contributing the most value to NOSTR in a certain group/subject. If you are interested in being an "expert" who will be added by people signing up, please let me know what groups you would like to listed in. If you would like to create some groups and add people to these groups, please let me know and I will give you admin access to add groups and people. There are many improvements and refinements to be made to this idea. It is "extremely beta" at the moment. You can login as a new user to test the flow at https://manyworlds.social This is an install based on Coracle. I hope to have a demo of the concept on Amethyst in the next few days. John, who started Coracle wants to "see" the people who are in the groups before someone follows them, so this will be added soon. . Any feedback is appreciated.

I am just here to help others.I expect clients UX will only keep improving.

I agree with you about the suggested follows list in the onboarding process. This article should be a part of it too.

Search hashtags, though you may have to add “str” like #catstr since that’s a thing here.

Just start posting your interests with the grownostr hashtag and you'll find people. I've done this for varying topics and had people show up and find me because of the different content and interests than just talking about Bitcoin and Nostr 🤣
