would you characterize Whatsapp and signal as "social communication"? because those are e2e encrypted with your own keys

WhatsApp? No. Signal? Yes. Though Signal is a company and could disappear along with their infrastructure and my ability to communicate.

They're literally the same protocol.

They may use the whisper protocol now, though I'd rather not have to trust Meta who isn't known for being honest.

You're trusting Signal too, unless you compile their app from source.

Which can be done. Can I do that for WhatsApp? I thought it was closed source.
