The constitution has been ignored since day one. It is, and always has been, a sales pitch to get mass buy in from the populace.

EVERY form of government is just a variation of an oligarchy. The only question is; how responsive to the needs of the population is the ruling class?

The idea was that a representative democracy would pressure the elite more than other forms of government. After two and a half centuries, it's not turning out that way.
