What is social media? #[0]
To Bitcoiners, perhaps social media is more trivial than money, because money is our primary method of assigning, storing, and transacting in value. With the development of the nostr protocol, social media now allows us to connect and transact messages freely, and also to establish value, without censorship from a central authority.
Social media is a way to create, exchange, and disseminate information. It's a place to find a broader network of peers. Social media is a way to reach audience. And until recently, many thought that social media allowed for freedom of speech. Why is freedom of speech sacred, also when transacting online? Isn't absolute pseudonymous freedom also harmful when insults, defaming, slander and spam occur freely? The paradigm needs to be rediscovered. The war on fake news has shown us that no one central authority should decide on what is considered truth. We’ve seen this with the publication of the Twitter Files. The reaction to this is to embrace the bare messenger, the algorithmless client, to rid ourselves of the centralized authority who can censor us to their will.
Bitcoin answered the question “What is money?”. Nostr recently answered the question “What is social media?”. How we navigate further will require more discussion, because the problem isn't completely solved. For now, rest assured that with the abundance of nostr clients, there will be competition that allows everyone to answer the question “What is social media?”.
Information is free. Information that is not free is called Bitcoin.
