Fun fact: the founders never debated whether the people should be armed. It was simply understood that an armed populace was the best defense of a free people. Records of the continental Congress show no debate on the matter, and what became the second amendment was hardly discussed beyond a few changes to phrasing.

They did, however, debate very publicly and passionately whether the federal government should be allowed to have an army at all.

The fight for freedom will never be fair. Those that want power never intend to use it fairly, so why would anyone expect them to fight fairly to gain it?
