I wrote and updated quite a few apps for sugar factories. RAD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_application_development) was the fastest development environment back in those days. Sadly RAD went out of fashion. Qt Creator https://qt.io/product/development-tools still works out as a RAD tool if you are writing C++ GUI. However, I have not used Qt Creator in ages. The last project (2007 or 2008) was just minor maintenance.
