Good video for non-tech savvy. Otherwise there’s tons of other more engaging videos on this topic that give you more on what to expect from eSIM at sea plans. Performance and bandwidth mileage varies.

I’m a NordVPN subscriber and was excited to see they have an eSIM plan, only to discover it’s not supported on cruise ships at sea. Great for land vacation, no bueno for cruising. Still, even the ones that do support cruisers, I may use them for times when I’m on different ports or if on a line that doesn’t include WiFi in the fare.

For those following along, eSIM at sea is using the ship’s satellite service. There’s no magic cellular tower in the ocean, so level set your expectations on speed accordingly.

The cruise ships do have cell towers called femtocells, which is a gateway to the satellite service, which is rapidly converting to Starlink across most ships and planes.
