The fervent mad rush for scientific publications can easily be explained by Goodhart's law:

Researchers encounter difficulties in boosting their h-index (reliability) solely through citation count; consequently, they endeavor to inflate it by increasing the volume of publications.

Essentially, the academic system is optimizing for quantity at the cost of quality.

Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not confined to just this field.
