It is so interesting that in some cases we are more forgiving for ourselves, such as we know our life context, therefore we understand that we had no influence on certain things. But we gladly judge others by the actions without the circumstances.
On the otherhand, we might beat up ourselves for not reaching somethings others reached, for similarly not knowing the circumstances.

This it is indeed so true.. probably an ego self protecting mechanism in the first case, and that could probably lead to then a sense of remorse that creates shame and resentment for not achieving what others did while we didn't, even if we thought we deserved it maybe more than others.
I agree like you say, missing information about circumstances, plus our tendency to evaluate often ourselves only in comparison to others about timing and results, and mostly not knowing our inner self..
