Could that mean that somehow they count the same npub times as many relays as you have, for example?

It's because not all relays respond in a timely manner and contact lists are different sometimes for different people on different relays. It's just not a good metric.

I get it, people want to see the size of their audience to make sure they're not speaking into the void, but being engaged and social also helps this too.
