How is that bizarre? Usually you have categories like "Work" or "Personal", and you can then easily identify events in your calendar based on the color, without having to read category names.

Btw, that's not just Apple (but they invented the protocol). Every decent CalDAV client supports those colors.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but Outlook is a better calendar.
It's not one color, as I just explained. Not understanding how the colors work doesn't make it "nonsensical".
