No. Amethyst has always been choppy and laggy on my pixel 5. I've always used the GitHub/Fdroid version though. Wouldn't make a difference to switch to play version would it?

It is likely a function of available memory and the old snapdragon architecture not being as welcome to the tons of parallel processing we use :(
Got it. Pixel 5 has the same 8gb ram as the latest Pixel 7 so it must be the tensor processor.
Interesting. Maybe also disk space? Was it ever fast for you? We changed from using our image proxy to downloading the full image and scaling it down on the phone. If disk is a function, you probably felt the app fast in Mar - mid May. If not, it could be something else. 🤔
Over 27gb free space. It's always been choppy and laggy and I've used Amethyst since the first release 🤷♂️ I've asked others but they always have Pixel 6's or higher which indeed have the Tensor processors.
