“Following” and “Followers” reminds me too much of legacy social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter.

Change for changes sake isn't good though. Sometimes it is ok to build on what came before, and those terms do describe what is happening accurately and intuitively IMO.
We should use Leaders and Disruptors 😂
