No, east to west or west to east you’re moving around in a circle because you’re not going north which is the center, if you go south, you’re leaving the magnetic field, which is moving from the center.

Right, I was thinking of it as simple lines on a map, left to right vs top to bottom
The compass points north always, the center, if you move further from the center you are going south, east and west doesnt move you further from the center or closer, you just circumnavigate
Yeah I get it now, just now how I was thinking about it. The most compelling thing to me on this whole “debate” is the horizon level when you’re looking out window of plane on a clear day. That is hard to argue in my view and one of the few easily verifiable data points.
