In July 1184, a group of European nobles gathered in a church in modern-day Germany to settle a land dispute. But unbeknownst to them, the Erfurt building had not been designed to hold a large group of people all at once — and the floor suddenly collapsed under their weight.

To make matters worse, this floor happened to be located directly above a latrine, which meant dozens of nobles fell into the massive cesspool below them.

Though some leaders were able to survive the disaster by clinging to the iron rails of the church's windows for dear life, many were not so lucky. And in the end, about 60 nobles ended up drowning in excrement.
