What do you mean by bland and vanilla/boring while also being pretentious? Why are the jumps in time considered lazy storytelling? I’ve never seen the movie. I’m just curious to know more deeply what you mean!

I feel like it’s pretty clear 🤷🏾Cronenberg usually does body horror movies, sci-fi and crime dramas. All edgier movies. The contrary of mainstream vanilla movies (like a boring rom com). This one went the boring rom com route. While also trying to tackle Freud, which is pretentious. They talk about his work as the father of psychoanalysis. Meanwhile the main love interest in the movie, a woman with severe mental issues, is cured by starting to work and not by all the psychoanalysis. Jumps in time are difficult to execute without seeming like lazy storytelling. Sometimes they work, most of the time they don’t. Better to focus on one specific time period
That is quite the departure for Cronenberg! I thoroughly enjoy his work like The Fly and Eastern Promises so it’s odd that he’d take on something like A Dangerous Method. Maybe he wanted to branch out? His son Brandon Cronenberg made a pretty great movie called Possessor. Have you seen it?
Cronenberg is a great filmmaker. So far that’s the fourth movie of his that is trash. The whole existential phase, except for ExistenZ: Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Crash are trash too. I’m not sure the others in the same phase as Dangerous Method will be good. I’ll see soon enough.
I’ve seen both of Brandon’s movies. Both are great. His daughter also made one. I’ll watch it soon enough
Didn’t know he had a daughter! The more Cronenbergs, the better!
Humane (2024) directed by Caitlin Cronenberg. The other one of Brandon is Infinity Pool (2023). Great movie
Infinity Pool is on my list! I haven’t heard of Humane but the premise is thoroughly disturbing just like any good Cronenberg
