I'd say being familiar with DND 5th edition rules would be helpful to understand how things work with BG3 as it is pretty much a 1-1 copy in terms of mechanics, but players new to the genre can definitely learn/adapt to it pretty quickly. They also have a lot of inspection tools/tool tips so you can figure exactly what things like "frightened", "surprised", "advantage", etc means
Wouldn't recommend trying out multiclassing though until you're very comfortable with the gameplay/rules
