A free market is a situation of voluntarism, designed to protect individual liberties, not to make the government or corporations into feudal lords owning people as subjects.

As John Locke noted, every person is born free, own themselves and the fruits of their labor. We cannot own other people.

But we did, long before Locke, in various different ways, under varying different arrangements own people as property and subjects.

What happened? Why did his words not influence Locke’s fellow countrymen and colleagues in government?

Society moves slowly. This is likely an in-built evolutionary function as a protection against potentially harmful changes. Only changes that are tested over time become accepted. In this case Locke's ideas brought us more freedom and a logical framework for property rights.

If everyone is born free and own themselves, we obviously can't own other people.
