no one is "allowing more data to be stored", that would be the case if the blocksize was being increased, but no one is increasing it

OP_RETURN in Bitcoin is a special command (opcode) that lets you embed small amounts of arbitrary data (text, files, etc.) into a transaction, creating a special "unspendable" output that effectively burns any Bitcoin sent to it, allowing for things like timestamping, token creation (like NFTs), and digital signatures without cluttering the active transaction pool, though recent updates have expanded its data limit significantly.

What it does:

Data Embedding: It attaches extra data (metadata, notes, links) directly to a Bitcoin transaction, storing it permanently on the blockchain.
