I love that Rick Rubin has decided not to follow suit with his grandparents and their obsession with putting plastic on their furniture, but instead turning his entire sitting area into a haunted house with ghost furniture

Perhaps, like you I’m not sure of his motives, but he does seem (from the few interviews I’ve watched him be the subject of or the conductor of) to try to focus on the work and minimize the distractions from it.
