If it's doing that, it's because other features that form along with those in predictable ways correlated to the positioning, are still visible in the doctored photo.

I think it's seeing very delicate remains of the imperfections, that the human eye doesn't notice.
AI image generators are remixing old content. the visual correction shit isn't AI, it's just simple convolution filters. they have got more advanced than simply blurring to the point they can capture a whole contour and smooth it. this has been normal since a decade maybe. i remember the first emergence of the "koreabot" idk if it was south korea where they first discovered this visual transformation matrix but all the images of korean girls from that time all seemed like ... some kind of weird psychotic cyberpunk anime clones.
don't assume because untrustworthy people call it "AI" that it's actually LLM or stablediffusion, tensor matrix stuff. it could be boring old 20 years ago shit, or even 30 years ago shit.
