I love driving car in Italy. Best experience around here. Very smooth, predictable and yet totally flexible ignoring any rules when needed.
Not much experience with trains, though I know they have decent network of high speed ones.

best trains in europe are bulgaria, hands down, romania is pretty good too, serbia used to be good, idk if they have gutted the bosnian train network... so many mountains it really needs it

I was quite nervous though when I found out everyone is going 100+ where a 40 limit was set on a highway. It took me a few days to learn to disregard Italian speed limits almost completely and just drive safely.
That's exactly why I like it there.
They drive safely, regardless what is written on/by the road 😅
