The Amazon Kindle might just be the best hardware / software. I got mine almost 10 years ago around 2015.

Had not charged it for months. Today I plug in to charge, and it just works. Books still there. After I connect to new home Wi-Fi it starts to sync. Everything just works.

I've had the same experience with my Barnes & Noble nook. Had it since 2013, still going strong.

Yep, as long as it's black and white e-ink with a good battery. I don't want my attention pulled away to other things when I'm reading.
