For Lightning to scale to 8 billion people it would have to be custodial and the channels needed would be reduced to bank-to-bank channels.

How many channels are we talking about?

It's a flawed premise anyways. Just as 8B don't use the dollar, gold, yuan, whatever, 8B will not be using Bitcoin. Ever.

Even if Bitcoin wins, there will be on chain, lightning, ecash, gold, silver, and yes...fiat

Let's aim for 1B, not 8 or 9

I agree, I think we just need to scale to whatever the market demands. Which means we don't need any scaling for quite a while.
