Business rates have killed the high street along with councils and their anti car parking attitude.

I could never understand the commercial logic of forcing shoppers to pay parking fees in order for them to give business to the shops that are trying to encourage them to come and spend money.
The entrepreneurial spirit in the UK is huge, but the government has done all it can to kill it off. It's no wonder the UK looks so run down.
