Alien review final thoughts:
I think it was George Lucas of all people who said, “A special effect without a story is a pretty bad story.” And that quote sums up Alien perfectly. The movie agonizingly lingers on its special effects, and they are impressive, even by today’s standards. In fact, they look better than modern day special effects in practically every way. But production values don’t make up for a paper thin plot, bone head characters, and flat out atrocious pacing and editing. The historical context of the film completely reshaping science fiction can’t be ignored, but it also can’t be used as a justification for why it’s “good”. First is not always best.
TLDR
It’s boring.
