It does a lot of good... From a certain point of view. It legitimizes the state, spreads around the guilt of state crimes, ritually numbs the public, reduces nuanced issues into simpler points for easier managing, allows the state to control more people and territory, gives advanced warning to the oligarchy of upcoming rivals, and gives stupid people something to engage with.
