There are a lot of great scientists out there who truly care about maintaining morals, and advancing global knowledge.
Unfortunately, there are a lot MORE scientists who care about the above to a point, but when offered life-changing money/clout/influence by a multi-billion dollar conglomerate who has a product to sell, will fold like a lawn chair.
"Everyone has a price."
The book I'm reading right now, "The Big Fat Surprise", is a stellar case study on how seemingly insignificant data-massages can accumulate over time, resulting in ludicrous detachment from logic, and ultimately disastrous outcomes for humanity. 10/10 recommend it.
Takeaway:
Humans will do human things (i.e. what is in their best personal interest) no matter how fancy of a job title they have, or how strong of a reputation they've previously built.
