This is the Victims of Communism Memorial.

Most people visit Washington, DC and never see it. It's easy to miss because it's small and tucked away on New Jersey Ave next to Georgetown Law, several blocks away from The Mall.

It is dedicated "To the more than one hundred million victims of communism and to those who love liberty."

Yesterday, a new mayor was inaugurated in New York City who promised to "replace rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism."

Collectivist ideology is un-American and leads to totalitarian dictatorship. It is easy to paint "individualism" as selfish. But what the new mayor fails to understand is that individualism is about liberty. And liberty is what America is all about. It always has been and it always will be.

Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.

It is time for Americans to remember that we have inalienable rights, endowed upon us by God. Among them, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

God bless America.
