FreeBSD maxis are not going to like this, but it's a smart move IMO.

PfSense Software Embraces Change: A Strategic Migration to the Linux Kernel

"Following in-depth evaluation and collaborative discussions, Netgate today announces a significant strategic shift in the technological foundation of the pfSense project. We are excited to reveal plans for the migration of the pfSense platform from the FreeBSD operating system to a Linux kernel with a FreeBSD userland."

This is big, their contributions to the freebsd network stack will be missed for sure.

I prefer OPNsense, but lol no worries this was just one hell of a pfSense April Fool's prank. The link was still live so I reposted. Check out the comments :)

I have used pfsense quite a bit so was surprised. And what a good prank lol

lol IKR?! They even gave a nod to their last one at the "eight years" link in the post. So good.

I saw that lol they were like dont worry we totally got this we've done it before. So smooth.

😎🤌✨

apple uses a BSD kernel

BSD is a microkernel, it is smaller and puts more things in userland

windows and linux kernels are basically the same in their architecture, giant, monolithic blobs with enormous APIs, as compared to the small and well organised BSD kernel

note that BSD has been a free kernel for a long long time, and yes it was developed by students and postgrads in berkeley university

you know the reason why it isn't more widely used?

hardware.

nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqn4csvgddd8djhrdv63etv7nea2ehp06aj8hdyw6l4q94yhq2htdqyghwumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnhd9hx2tcpzamhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgtcqyra6acjnsg8a0j4kdjfnv7nxk6zck4dyz4ywg6l86vm62up594epw3m9lzz

mainly because almost all hardware supports windows, and then reluctantly they release some, often closed source binary blobs for linux, and then the best BSDs can do is wrap a them in a Linux API, which is a bit hit and miss

apple is profiting massively off the BSD code base but they give NOTHING back

so, you may now stop gloating

this is the inevitable result of microsoft dodgy and probably illegal collusion with hardware makers

glad it makes you happy

sheesh, i better go back to blocking this shit, and anyone who reposts this ignoramus

I dont see the advantages to this. Im glad I moved to OPNsense last year.

OPNsese is good stuff, but this was an April Fool's prank. It was still live so I reposted it. Check out the comments :)
