The railings are wobbly and it gets really slippery with the cloud mist but I love it. I pray they decide to renovate it rather than dismantle it.
Kalalau is our hands down favorite hike and camping spot on the islands!

Susie, I kid you not I almost died hiking there! I was excited and used an app based gps bc I wanted to see a waterfall. It said it would only be a mile to see it so I figured I’d be fine. I kid you not, by the time I was halfway in,my foot path narrowed and it couldn’t have been more than 6 inches. I held onto tree roots on the side of the mountain. I remember looking down and seeing helicopters below me and praying I wouldn’t slip. It was too narrow to turn around and there were other hikers in front and behind me, no railings, I didn’t have water, zero service, and zero gear. It was stupid… but I’ll tell ya what, I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life.

Oh lord, that’s almost 5 miles one way to the falls! That’s why I never trust those apps. Kalalau is gnarly after rain and can be really treacherous especially the Crawler’s Ledge portion. People are rescued from the trail all the time. In fact it’s the only hike here where I always use poles and sometimes microspikes too. So glad you got to do it, see the waterfall and got out safely! It is a stunningly beautiful trail few get to experience.
