Didn't knew it and didn't honestly even care enough to dig deeper until you asked.
From what I understand, you get credits when participating in the videos with likes and comments, you won't be able to upload videos without a few credits in your account.
What I do enjoy is that one can download easily any playlist or video. Will keep checking, I'm making an effort to reduce the usage of YouTube and support healthier alternatives.
