Isn't layer 2 an extension/subdivision of the capabilities of layer 1? I thought it was a built-up extension that was bound to and specializes layer 1. (As opposed to a different thing.)

Just like an oven and an air fryer can both cook your food, one does it faster than the other. Similarly, while Bitcoin’s Layer 1 handles transactions securely, Layer 2 solutions process them at lightning speed. It’s all about efficiency. Same goal, different pace. ⚡️

Sure, but they aren't a second bitcoin, are they? They use layer 1 as a foundation to to specialize functionality within the subset of layer 1 capacity (that's allocated). Hence the "layering".
