Afaik the problem isn't only storage, it's mostly bandwidth, blocks must be propagated through the network before the next block(10min) if blocks get too big it it might take longer. However, I'm in the increase the blocksize slowly over time camp, bc of the reasons you mentioned.

Storage is cheap, but the UTXO set has to be kept in RAM, not on the hard drive. All the degen stuff over the last year has bloated the UTXO set significantly. Right now RAM is probably the hardware component of greatest concern when considering the cost of a full node.
