Our goal is to make self-custodial personal storage relays as easy as Google drive/Apple cloud.

We don't need to connect to them all the time, but they must be there if we truly care about censorship resistance.

Why cloud ? Can they not be on device !

It's likely that is not going to fit.

I see .. sure ..build a cloud version .. then people can figure out on device model ..

Just do it like Onedrive/Sharepoint split. Then you could work on things offline and sync with the cloud relay, when you're online again. And you could keep some things entirely offline, if they were particularly private or in draft format. You could download a book to read on ePaper, for instance.

If they sync, then they don't have to have identical content, you just have to mark the stuff -- or the type of stuff -- you want to stay synced. Like, not much point syncing most kind 01 notes, as that's immediately-consumed chatter, but books, articles, technical documentation, git proposals, etc.

Onedrive / Sharepoint !!! Did it ever work :-) ?

I was hoping everyone posts to their on device relays .. and they get synced to the popular ones (Damus etc) as and when user gets online . . or through mashtastic or something - without having to go through an ISP ..

btw - #Gossip kinda already does that with its offline mode -- I can draft the notes in offline mode when I dont have wifi and it syncs when I go online ..

Yes, I save the drafts to a local relay (for privacy). I think most clients save to a database or cache, but I prefer using relays, where possible.

Once it's done, I publish to my personal cloud relay and then broadcoast from there (or not, I sometimes leave things only for the people I share a relay with, as not everything I post online is meant to be publicly viewable, and my cloud really is AUTH-TO-READ).

Interesting .. do you have this set up documented somewhere .. I would like to set up a similar thing .. cuz I want to use #nostr as my go to notes app ( as it was intended probably ) .. and I dont want all my notes braodcast in public space ..

If you're on the computer, you can just use Nostrudel and setup a local relay as an app relay for writing. Then you can toggle the writing on-and-of.

If you're on Amethyst on Android, use Amber and Citrine, and then you can write only to your local relay, by selecting it in the writing form (click on the symbol above the text-entry field) or by adjusting the settings in the relay management page.

But, increasingly, the relays themselves are going to allow you to define what goes where and to whom.

'm mostly working on OtherStuff, tho, so maybe that's why I am more intentional, about what I write, were. I wouldn't want to spam Damus with gobs of application data events or every.damn.commit.from.every.damn.repo. 😂

Like, there's no point in publishing every single event ever created to Nostr.Band. It won't be long, until most events are OtherStuff and/or machine-generated, and cloud relays cost hardly anything, if you already have space in the cloud.

Why publish your company's financial statement or the patient database record from your hospital to nos.lol? 🤷🏻‍♀️ You could put that data anywhere you put a websocket.

I mean, your snazzy, new refrigerator, with a touchscreen, could have a relay, and @ you, when the milk runs out. Why should that transmission go over Damus?

Hum, so maybe in the future we could have an option to have bitkey.world using Nostr relays to backup, instead of Google Drive and icloud?

i look for making out a personal nostr open to fork in my sparetime. anyway i wish to having budget for it. do u know fundings for it thqt wul b interested? hax.pe

waiting for it
