Because liquidity tied up in a node that is offline is unproductive. If you haven't communicated to your channel partners how long the node will be offline and when it will come back, they have no way to gage how long that capital will be unproductive.
I like managing channels through Lightning Network Plus because each channel has its own messages thread where you can communicate with your channel partners.
