Disks are an ancient Surma or Suri tradition (some can measure up to 40 centimetres in diameter) and a way to attract husbands among Surma women from the lower valley of Omo Rover in Ethiopia.

Since girls, they attend training to enhance their beauty: they remove up to four lower teeth, crack their lips and insert clay or wooden plates.

These dishes reflect the power of those who use them and allow them to obtain a more important marriage dowry.
