How much would you recommend donating to the project if we went the DIY route and still want to support?

1000% support the DIY path. If everyone donated a few bucks worth of sats when they updated the software on their signer that would go a really long way, that's what comes to mind. Whatever you're able to give, we appreciate. 🙂
They’re getting purged on default mempools but they are hanging around on higher configured mempools.
