Antim the Ivirian, a Georgian prince enslaved and later freed, became Metropolitan of Wallachia. A master of languages, he established the first printing press in Wallachia, publishing religious texts in Romanian, Slavonic, and Greek. His efforts greatly promoted literacy and culture. Tragically, his reforms and defense of the poor angered powerful boyars, who falsely accused him of treason. He was deposed and exiled, murdered on his way to exile in 1716, becoming a martyr for his faith and his people.
Holy Hieromartyr Antim, pray to God for us!
