I see it like this:

Socialism was supposed to be more "scientific" and "rational" than the free market, and therefore to deliver greater prosperity. When that prosperity failed to come, they instead made "eco" poverty into a virtue.

I'm sure some people are just concerned about clean air and get swept up into the rest of it. However I think the root of the movement is anti-human and anti-industrial.
