If someone said “custodial Lightning is the CBDC (I.e. surveillable, taxable, controllable)” what would you say to them?

Nothing. I'd walk away from them and go use cashu for another layer of protection

“How do you control a cluster of nodes I own that run on tor in different parts of the world?

How do you know which transactions belong to whom?”

Admittedly, I’m not an expert. But I haven’t figured out the above yet. So if I’m wrong, maybe I learn something.

“Governments are good at cutting off the heads of a centrally controlled networks like Napster, but pure P2P networks like Gnutella and Tor seem to be holding their own.”

Custodial Lightning has (centrally controlling) heads that can be cut off.

I totally missed the “custodial” part!

Not your keys…

Fair comparison if the use of the term CBDC is used rhetorically rather than accurately

That’s what I was trying to get at. It’s obviously not issued by a central bank, but in practice, is the user experience the same or similar…

It's more about user risks rather than experience in that case

So we can just talk in terms of how much trust we're putting in a third party

The experience of being surveilled, taxed, controlled

Will definitely matter when the user actively faces those actions
