I use the mute button frequently. In my view, it is the right way to deal with content you do not want to see for whatever reason, sort of like a killfile on USENET.
My guess is that with Threads most of us will not need to worry because Threads will defederate lots of interesting instances, so those are going to split off into the #freeverse.
