Iceland has it tough - 900 earthquakes in the past 24 hours. One of the worst disaster in modern history is the Laki eruption killing about a quarter of Icelandic population in 1784, causing haze across Europe leading to widespread famine due to contamination of soil and lack of sun. It was also detected in the US. It took about 3 years to recover. There's probably a good reason why Iceland is called the 'land of ice and fire' - it has some of the largest glaciers and most active volcanoes.
