I use the Garmin inReach service for fishing and river rafting in remote areas. The transmission of text messages, location updates, or SOS alerts largely depends on atmospheric conditions, and it's common for messages to take 20-30 minutes to send or receive. However, I wouldn't be surprised if negligence played a part. I often question the reliability of the SOS feature; would someone actually respond? After all, we know that even the police don't always answer calls in South Africa.

Yep I'm suspecting the latter - currently even the 10111 police emergency line is understaffed and not being responded to properly...
