Per the algo, the proper hammer for the game of Hammerschlagen is a cross-peen or blacksmith's hammer with a wedge-shaped end that is at least 2.5 pounds. We always used masonry nails but I'm not a purist on that part. Hitting with the point end is non-negotiable
