Most apps won't have a self contained update flow, so you'll need something like obtanium to avoid running deprecated versions.

Yup yup. RSS feed for GitHub releases should do it. 🤔

Trying to do this as non-automatic as possible. I want to choose what software I run. Mainly because it’s a play around device.

Beyond my technical depth but believe this is essentially what obtanium is doing, with some polish.
